To make your own ocean in a box is so easy to do. Your kids will love it and enjoy extended, focused play time. Beyond just giving your kids something fun to do, there are a lot of other benefits to sensory play – Amanda Morgan just recently wrote a fabulous article, Why Sensory Play is Important for Preschoolers, which you can check out for more information.
To make your ocean box, the first thing you need to do is dye some rice blue to make the filling for the box.
Just get a ziploc back, fill it with the amount of rice you want to use, squirt some instant hand sanitizer into the bag – enough to lightly coat the rice, but you don’t want to make it too wet. Then add blue food coloring, close the bag and mix it around until all the rice is blue. Now open the bag and set it in the sun to dry. It should dry in just a few minutes.
Pour the rice into a box and add fish, boats, pirates, seashells and other ocean toys to complete your sensory bin.
