Children are little people – not half a person – but a whole person, as equally deserving of love and respect as you and me. But they are not mini-adults. They’re different. And they have a lot going on inside all the time as they grow and develop into adulthood. Do you ever wonder what is going on inside those little minds? Especially when they say and do things that seem unexplainable?
What if there was a way to get inside their minds and hearts to gain an understanding of what’s going on? What if we could use this understanding to give children what they need at each stage they’re in to help them through their development? We want to be guides and mentors for our children, but it’s hard if we can’t relate to where our kids are at developmentally. And children don’t tell us – they can’t always put into words what they need. Often they only know what they feel in the present moment, and those feelings can be overpowering. We have to become like detectives to figure out what’s going on when we observe problem behaviors.
This is where child development helps. At its best it gets us inside our children’s minds to help us know when to be concerned and when to be relaxed, what activities will be best, and what won’t work. Understanding our children’s development will help us know what will make an impact in their lives, what we can realistically expect our children, and which expectations are not realistic.
So come, journey with me and let’s learn all we can about our amazing little people that God has entrusted into our care for this short span of years that will come and go in the blink of an eye.
